In the 1970s, video art became increasingly established (including Projekt ’74 in Cologne) and entered documenta 6 (1977) with the “Video” section curated by Wulf Herzogenrath. From the 1980s onwards, artists developed new technical possibilities for manipulating the structure of electronic images and sound in order to alter the aesthetics of visual language and perception. With access to digital image production, new dimensions opened up once again.

As a pioneer of video art, the art historian and curator Wulf Herzogenrath laid the groundwork for an art form that is now established worldwide; as chief curator of the Nationalgalerie (from 1989), he also championed its inclusion in the museum’s collection. His art-historical research on the Bauhaus led to his ongoing commitment to the art-historical recognition of interdisciplinarity in art and culture.
