“Wenn man schreibt, muss man so schreiben, dass man hinter der Verzweiflung die Möglichkeit und hinter dem Untergang den Ausweg spürt.” (When you write, you must write in such a way that, behind despair, one senses possibility, and behind ruin, a way out.)

A Look Beyond the Suburbs

In Berlin-Adlershof, the writer Anna Seghers found a new home after many years in exile. Her flat, where she lived from 1955 to 1981, contains not only many personal mementos but also her extensive library of around 10,000 volumes, including signed copies from many of her writer friends.

Her living room was a meeting place for friends from various countries, with whom she maintained a correspondence.

If you venture to the outskirts of the city, you will not only gain insights into Seghers’ eventful life and her steadfast commitment as a writer to social issues of global significance, but also an understanding of her appreciation for the visual arts and her transatlantic perspective, shaped by her own experiences. It was no coincidence that she called the balcony outside her flat a “crow’s nest”, from which she could gaze into the distance as if the sea lay beyond the trees.

On International Museum Day, three guided tours will take place at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm.

Due to the limited space in the museum, please register in advance. Admission begins 5 to 10 minutes before the tour.
