Vivat Chodowiecki! A 300th Birthday Celebration

Born in Gdańsk, Daniel Chodowiecki (1726–1801) soon made a name for himself as a graphic artist and illustrator, establishing a reputation in his adopted home of Berlin and beyond. As director of the Akademie der Künste, he devised a programme of reforms and gave the institution a new direction as a society of artists.
Today, the archives preserve significant parts of his artistic and written legacy. It has recently been possible to augment the collection by adding outstanding works from private sources – sufficient reason to mount a proper celebration in honour of the tercentenary of his birth.
The day before the presentation of the Chodowiecki Prize for Polish and German Drawing and Graphic Design, instituted by Günter Grass, a varied evening programme awaits: Simon Häuser will give a talk on The 12 Lives of Daniel Chodowiecki, and Werner Heegewaldt, Anna Schultz and Robert Violet will present the important new accessions acquired from private owners.
