This historical review walk takes you through the Hansaviertel district, following the life story of Ernst Toller, and offers an insight into both his activities and his connections with his contemporaries. The walk highlights his influence on politics and theatre during the Weimar period.

Hello, Hansaviertel – tell us, who used to be part of the neighbourhood?

Destroyed during the war and erased from collective memory. This is the fate that befell Brückenallee 33, a residential building in the prewar Hansa-Viertel that was home to a prominent group of residents. The street name was later completely erased from the layout of today’s Hansaviertel.

Although listed by name in address books from 1900 to 1920, three residents of the building have almost slipped through the cracks of more recent acts of remembrance. Each was demonstrably and actively involved in the militarism, colonialism, and imperialism of the German Empire.

This is where the Performance Walk begins. A collective, coordinated stroll through the Hansaviertel, enveloped in a collage of sound, song, and spoken word. By layering and interweaving fragments of text with static gestures, dynamic and affective forms of expression, as well as transcultural references to marching songs and funeral hymns, the piece explores the tension between, and the incongruity of, remembrance and commemoration.

Uncovering, marking, processing, and contextualizing: through a walk in the neighborhood surrounding the Hansabibliothek and the Akademie der Künste at Hanseatenweg, the Performance Walk invites a focused engagement with the lingering echoes of colonial continuities.

The politicians go from house to house

The story is told of the war volunteer Peter Kollwitz, the Victory Column and the political posters by Käthe Kollwitz. Käthe Kollwitz had her studio in the Hansaviertel district from 1912 to 1928 and, in 1919, became the first woman to be elected a member of the Akademie der Künste.
