Ellen Auerbach (1906–2004) is regarded as one of the leading avant-garde photographers of the first half of the 20th century. Together with Grete Stern (1904–1999), she developed new forms of portrait and advertising photography. In 1933 she emigrated to Tel Aviv and lived in the USA from 1937 onwards. Photography expeditions took her to Central and South America and to Europe. Later, Ellen Auerbach also worked as a learning therapist.

To mark the 120th anniversary of Ellen Auerbach’s birth, the Library of the Akademie der Künste presents a selection of items from her estate library, which has remained largely unknown to date. Visitors can discover, above all, art books, signed copies and other rarities from her library.

Ellen Auerbach Fellowship

The Ellen Auerbach Fellowship of the Akademie der Künste is a grant in the field of international photography; it was first awarded in 2006 to mark the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth and is funded from her estate.
