Since September 2026, the “Serbia Window” has been featuring news from Serbia on the website of the European Alliance of Academies. The alliance of European cultural institutions and artists aims to create more space for reports and analysis from Serbia that do not typically reach the European public. The content focuses on news from the independent arts and culture scene as well as on current cultural policy developments in the country.

The idea for the Serbia Window originated during intensive discussions between members of the European Alliance of Academies and Serbian artists and cultural practitioners at the end of April 2026 in Belgrade which resulted in the Belgrade Declaration (see statement).

Manos Tsangaris, President of the Akademie der Künste and the European Alliance of Academies, comments on this, saying: “During discussions in Belgrade with independent artists, cultural stakeholders, publishers and academics, it became clear how severely the Serbian government is increasingly dismantling arts, culture, education, media, as well as the publishing sector. However, equally impressive were the reports of the protest movement initiated by students, which is reaching large sections of the population through new forms of action. The Serbia Window aims to provide first-hand coverage of this.”

The first article was written on the initiative of Akademie member Cécile Wajsbrot and recounts the history of Radio 021, named after Novi Sad’s telephone dialling code. Deputy editor-in-chief Zoran Strika gives a vivid picture of the difficult political conditions to which the independent radio station has continuously had to adapt.
