The photographer Katharina Sieverding has been awarded the Käthe Kollwitz Prize 2017.
Katharina Sieverding asks fundamental questions about the political and social conditions of the reception of art and the processes of artistic creation. With unusual pictorial inventions in her photo series, both in large and small formats, as well as her public poster campaigns, she has continued to significantly expand photography's forms of expression since the late 1960s.
Sieverding's perception of both history and the present is the starting point for a visual examination of issues such as film, media, the public sphere, emancipation, identity and the individual. Like Käthe Kollwitz, she combines political and social criticism in her work.
