Montage or Fake News?

The Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung/bpb) has funded the special event programme for the exhibition “John Heartfield – Photography plus Dynamite”, which cannot take place due to the current health hazards posed by the coronavirus. In its place, the Akademie der Künste is making online offers available as an alternative.

Both historical and contemporary montage is examined and reviewed from the perspective of various art forms ‒ in images, film, literature and theatre, using found objects as an aesthetic principle in music and as a combination of text and design. Among the topics addressed are the relationship between montage and fake news, as well as if photomontage has reached its swan song. Concert recordings, audio plays, films, talks and interviews explore interactions between digitality, truth and narratives in politics and art.
