Artistic Freedom. A Core Element of the European Project European Alliance of Academies
The European Alliance of Academies stands in solidarity with the Hungarian writers' association Szépirók Társasága in Budapest and sends a signal for the freedom of art in Europe. Due to drastic cuts in the annual budget, the country's independent art and cultural scene and the existence of Szépirók Társasága, one of the founding members of the European Alliance of Academies, is at risk.
With public discussions, artistic programmes, networking events and talks with political decision-makers, the Alliance members want to draw attention to the political mechanisms that - although democratically legitimised - make numerous restrictions on artistic freedom possible in the first place, whether in Hungary or other European countries.

Szépirók Társasága was founded in 1997 to promote contemporary literature and to contribute to the democratisation of cultural policy in Hungary. Its nearly 400 members include some of Hungary's most internationally renowned writers as well as cultural journalists, critics, translators and literary scholars. www.szepiroktarsasaga.hu
