Safe ventilation technology at the Akademie der Künste
The ventilation systems in the public areas of the Akademie der Künste have been optimised. Our facilities are now equipped with high-performance ventilation and air-conditioning systems that operate with 100% fresh air supply, fine particle filters for germs and bacteria and UV air disinfection technology. Depending on the room, an air exchange frequency of three to eight times an hour is guaranteed. Air quality is monitored consistently and filters are changed regularly.

Accessibility
The Akademie building at Pariser Platz can be reached by public transportation (see above for details).
To make it easier for visitors with disabilities to get here, we recommend the VBB bus and train assistance service provided by Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg. Further information
There are two accessible parking spaces directly in front of the building. The distance from there to the main entrance of the Akademie der Künste is approx. 30 m.
The route to the entrance is easily navigable. The surface varies between concrete slabs and small, slightly uneven cobblestones.
There are still no automatic entrance doors. However, reception personnel are aware of the situation and can provide assistance if required. If you run into any problems, you can contact the reception personnel by phone: +49 (0)30 200 57 2000
The entrance area is accessible at ground level, although a floor incline of some 5% needs to be negotiated in order to reach the reception desk and the exhibition halls.
All passageways are at least 90 cm wide.
The ticket sales counter is right at the reception desk. The reception desk is 120 cm high at its lowest point. The café is located on the left, with the Academy’s bookshop on the right behind the reception desk.
Wheelchairs, walking aids and pushchairs can be left (unattended) in front of the entrance to the exhibition halls or next to the ticket desk. Wheelchairs and portable folding stools are available for borrowing (please enquire at the reception desk). Pushchairs are not always permitted in the exhibitions – please ask about the current situation prior to your visit.
The exhibition halls, the event hall (Plenary Hall), the Reading Room (archive and library), the bistro and the bookshop can all be accessed at ground level or via lifts.
There are two lifts providing access to the Plenary Hall, the upper exhibition areas and the Reading Room. The larger lift has an area of 230 x 200 cm, with an entrance width of 200 cm. The smaller lift has an area of 160 x 200 cm, with an entrance width of 120 cm. There is a large open area on each floor in front of the lifts.
The exhibition halls are on the ground floor, with other exhibition areas located on the second floor (Sculpture Garden). The Picture Cellar does not have barrier-free access and can only be reached via a staircase (on the ground floor).
The gallery/bridge can also only be reached via a staircase. It is used, for example, for workshops and other KUNSTWELTEN (cultural education) events. The bridge is about 4 m wide.
The Event Hall (Plenary Hall) is located on the second floor. There are two spaces provided for wheelchair users along with companion seats.
The Reading Room (archive and library) is located on the first floor. Visitors cannot open the door themselves from outside. To be admitted to the room, you will need to catch the eye of the Reading Room staff. You are asked to register for access to the Reading Room by email (lesesaalpariserplatz@adk.de). The counter in the Reading Room is 68 cm high. The desks are 69 cm high, which means that a wheelchair can fit under them.
Accessible toilets can be found on basement level 1, basement level 3 (Black Box) and the second floor (Plenary Hall):
Basement level 1 and 2nd floor (women’s toilet on each floor):
Inside, there is a 200 x 120 cm area providing space for manoeuvre in front of the toilet, with 200 x 200 cm available outside. There is a space of 100 cm next to the toilet on the left, along with a folding grab rail. The sink is wheelchair-accessible. The mirror is visible from a sitting position. There is an alarm trigger with a display and acoustics inside the toilet cubicle.
On basement level 1, access to the toilet via the hallway is rather more confined (200 x 120 cm).
Basement level 1 (men’s toilet):
Inside and outside, there is a 200 x 200 cm area providing space for manoeuvre in front of the toilet. Behind the door (inside the cubicle) there is a space of 200 x 120 cm in which to move. There is a space of 100 cm next to the toilet on both left and right, along with folding grab rails on either side of the toilet. The sink is wheelchair-accessible. The mirror is visible from a sitting position. There is an alarm trigger with a display and acoustics inside the toilet cubicle.
Visitors without wheelchairs are charged 50 cents to use the toilet on basement level 1; it is free for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs. Pressing the bell push on the glass door in front of the entrance to the toilet will notify reception. A member of staff will then open the swivel-mounted glass door by pressing a button at the reception desk, allowing people to pass through.
Basement level 3 (women’s toilet):
Inside, there is a 200 x 200 cm area providing space for manoeuvre in front of the toilet, with just 120 x 120 cm available outside.
We strive to make information on accessibility transparent and are working to make our listed building even more accessible. If you have comments or questions, please feel free to contact us: inklusion@adk.de
