Vita

Franziska Wenning studied directing at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch in Berlin and was a guest student at the Inter-University Centre for Dance (HZT Berlin) in the MA Choreography programme. Among other projects, Wenning was invited to the Authors’ Workshop of the Deutsches Theater Berlin/Box to direct a production. Most recently, she worked on sustainable concepts in the performing arts as part of two residencies at the Pina Bausch Centre in Wuppertal and staged a work that dealt with village theatre. Her interests in theatre practice and theory involve physical forms of movement and performance comparable to words and language, as well as the traces of the sacred and religious in contemporary human beings.

Residency

My residency will continue a staged approach to the theatrical translation of the unsealing of soil as the starting point of a rite for the earth, in which movements of labour and prayer were invoked. Based on this, I would like to go on to consider sacred body constructions as theatrical processes. From this, I intend to work towards a methodology that generates ritual and sacred forms of movement from everyday movement material. How does ritual movement change the space? Where are the ritual thresholds in the space, and what are they made of? This will be explored and tested on-site, and with the location. Ultimately, it will culminate in an attempt to build a physically moving cathedral within a circular dramaturgy.
