About the Section

The section presents, discusses and supports international productions involving theatre, dance or performance. It  stages individual events to elucidate particular topics arising from the work of its members.

Its thematic focuses examine major aesthetic connections with a particular emphasis on the social dimension of artistic work. It also fosters international dialogue in theatre and is concerned with international approaches to theatre projects with migrants.

Working in conjunction with the Freie Universität Berlin and the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Programme, the Performing Arts Section instituted the Valeska Gert Guest Professorship in 2006.

The section liaises between all the performing arts institutions on issues of cultural policy and is committed to the exchange of ideas between the independent scene and established operators conducted in a spirit of solidarity.

Events

The section stages individual events to elucidate particular topics arising from the work of its members. Its thematic focuses examine major aesthetic connections with a particular emphasis on the social dimension of artistic work.

It also fosters international dialogue in theatre. This was accomplished most recently with the guest performances by the transnational KULA Compagnie, Journals of Exile (2023) and Underground Birds (2024), which examined the theme of migration and the refugee experience in different times and places.

The Valeska Gert Guest Professorship

The Valeska Gert Guest Professorship was instituted in 2006 as a cooperation between the Akademie der Künste, the Freie Universität Berlin and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

It is awarded each semester to a dance or performance artist, who works together with students in the dance studies master’s programme applying a practice-oriented approach. The content and thematic focus of the seminar are introduced at the beginning of the process in a public lecture, and the outcomes are shown to the audience in a final presentation by the students at the end.

Prizes and Fellowships

In addition to awarding the Berlin Art Prize every year (in the performing arts category), the section takes it in turns with the Film and Media Arts Section to confer the Akademie der Künste’s annual Konrad Wolf Prize.

It also awards two of the most important acting prizes in the German-speaking world: the quinquennial Joana Maria Gorvin Prize and the Hermine Körner Ring, which is presented each time for life. Another lifetime award is the Pandora’s Box for theatre directors. In addition, the section has in its care the Tilla Durieux Jewellery, which is passed on every ten years by the current recipient to a person of their choice.

The O. E. Hasse Prize is a prestigious award for up-and-coming acting talent, given each year in alternation to students of either the Otto Falckenberg School in Munich or the Ernst Busch University of Theatre Arts in Berlin.

The section also nominates international artists each year for the Berlin Fellowship and the Villa Serpentara Fellowship.
