Final Days

Michael Ruetz, born in Berlin in 1940, is one of Germany’s most renowned photographic artists. He began his career in the late 1960s as a member of the editorial team of Stern magazine in Hamburg. After initially becoming known through his photographs of the student protest movement in West Germany, his  portraits of the APO (extra-parliamentary opposition) are by now just as much a part of Germany’s collective visual memory as his reportage photos from Greece during the military dictatorship or those of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal. He has been a member of the Film and Media Arts Section of the Akademie der Künste since 1998.
