Berlin Art Prize – Jubilee Endowment 1848/1948

Since 1971, the Akademie has awarded the Berlin Art Prize – Jubilee Endowment 1848/1948 on behalf of the federal state of Berlin. The endowment was jointly funded by the Berlin City Council and the Senate of Berlin in commemoration of the 1848 March Revolution, which called for parliamentary elections and social reforms. The prize honours artistic achievements and supports artistic work in all six areas represented by the Akademie.

The Berlin Art Prize is awarded annually on 18 March by Berlin’s Governing Mayor together with the Akademie president. All six Sections of the Akademie award a Kunstpreis (Art Prize) every year in their individual fields. One of these is the Berlin Art Prize – Grand Prize, awarded by a different section each year. The Literature Section awards the Berlin Art Prize – Grand Prize as the “Fontane Prize”.

The Grand Art Prize is endowed with 15,000 euros. The six Kunstpreis awards (Art Prizes) are each endowed with 5,000 euros.
