Manfred Krug: A star in the East and West

Archive Opening

Manfred Krug (1937–2016) was one of the few stars of the GDR. Whether as an actor, jazz singer or entertainer, with his unconventional manner and inimitable charm, he inspired millions of viewers. His films which include Beschreibung eines Sommers (1963) and Spur der Steine (1966) now occupy an important place in German film history. But even more than the actor, people adored the singer and saw themselves in his interpretations of his own lyrics sung in his raspy baritone.

After moving to West Germany in 1977, he soon became an audience favourite, whether as a truck driver in Auf Achse (1978–1993), as a lawyer in the series Liebling Kreuzberg (1986–1998) written by his friend Jurek Becker or as a Tatort detective (1984-2001). On the occasion of the opening of the Manfred Krug Archive, this great artist will be remembered through talks, film clips, readings and singing.
