Konrad Wolf Prize 2021 to Abderrahmane Sissako
The Konrad Wolf Prize 2021 is to be awarded to the Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako. From the jury statement: “Viewers of his films are changed when they leave the cinema. They use all the registers of cinematographic skill and want to move something: us. Our line of vision, our attention, our senses are challenged in the most beautiful, sharpest way.”
In the film Bamako, he uses a fictitious court case in which the people of Africa accuse organisations such as the World Bank and the IMF to show how poverty is systematically promoted.
