By 1907, when the Königliche Akademie der Künste moved into the building on Pariser Platz that Ernst von Ihne had redesigned, it was considered modern. A century later, following war damage, the GDR era and the fall of the Berlin Wall, Behnisch & Partner critically reconstructed the front building. It is now among the most interesting works of architectural Modernism in Berlin. On Open Monument Day – where the motto this year in Berlin is “Modernism. Modern. Berlin” – architectural tours (in German and English) offer many insights from the roof terrace to the Picture Cellar.
