display depot architecture models
Akademie der Künste opens the Schaudepot at Pariser Platz
Friday, 1 November 2024, 7 pm, Pariser Platz 4
Architectural models have a special aesthetic appeal. They fascinate with their vividness, their variety of materials used and their visionary power. Even in the digital age, they have by no means lost their significance as a three-dimensional working tool, competition entry or presentation object in architectural practice. In the field of research, they are a source of enduring relevance. The Schaudepot at Pariser Platz not only provides exclusive insights into the Architectural Archives’ outstanding collection and the working methods of an archive, the examples also show the clear potential that architectural models still have today as a conceptual tool and vehicle.” (Werner Heegewaldt, Director of the Archives).
The Schaudepot is located in the Akademie building on Pariser Platz and is regularly open for guided tours. The permanent exhibition presents highlights from the Architectural Archives’ collection of more than 750 models by over 50 architects: from exhibits from the Akademie’s Prussian era to Neues Bauen models from the early 20th century, to urban planning designs for Berlin from the period of reconstruction following the Second World War up to the present day. Temporary exhibitions explore current topics relating to architecture and urban planning, including, currently, architecture projects that focus on the generation of solar energy. Architectural drawings, photos and plans illuminate the stories behind the models and provide additional insightful details.
In a first phase, the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung and the Wüstenrot Stiftung supported the cleaning and restoration of the architectural models. In a second phase, the Schaudepot was established with the support of the Wüstenrot Stiftung. “We are thrilled that the Akademie der Künste has created a space for architectural communication in the heart of Berlin,” said Philip Kurz, Managing Director of the Wüstenrot Stiftung. “The collection offers a range of opportunities to build awareness for the preservation of architectural heritage. At the same time, the models and the ideas they embody provide an ideal starting point for discussions surrounding the architecture and urban planning of tomorrow.”
On Friday, 1 November 2024, the new permanent exhibition will open at 7 pm at the Akademie der Künste at Pariser Platz 4. The welcome address by Anh-Linh Ngo, Vice-President of the Akademie der Künste and architecture publicist will be followed by introductions by Werner Heegewaldt, Director of the Archives, and Laura Puin of the Wüstenrot Stiftung. A panel discussion will then be held with Hilde Léon, architect and Member of the Akademie, the architectural historian Matthias Noell and Amrei Buchholz, Director of the Architectural Archives, about the value of architectural models for practice and research. After the event there will be guided tours of the Schaudepot.
The event is supported by the Wüstenrot Stiftung.
