“Reuse” – international symposium on dealing with the architectural legacies of European dictatorships
1 and 2 July 2023, Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz
The international symposium on 1 and 2 July is part of the accompanying programme to the exhibition “POWER SPACE VIOLENCE. Planning and building under National Socialism”. Under the title “Reuse”, the symposium explores how the architectural legacies of the dictatorships of the first half of the 20th century are dealt with in Europe.
Speakers will present examples of sites in Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Ukraine. How has the approach to the Nazi Party Rally Grounds changed since 1945, and what is the concept for the conversion of the Nuremberg Congress Hall? What has become of the remnants of the air armaments centres in and around Berlin? What consequences do the National Socialists’ “Nordic” landscape projects for the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein today? Based on examples from Madrid, Rome and Tresigallo, the reuse, conversion and redesign of the architectural legacies of dictatorships are placed in a European context. Kraków and Kharkiv, on the other hand, are faced with the unique legacy under which both the German occupation and the Stalinist “liberation” are perceived as architectures of occupation.
The closing panel poses the question of what a future European culture of remembrance might look like, and what recommendations for action the symposium can provide to politicians.
