JUNGE AKADEMIE, VISIT and E-WERK Luckenwalde are awarding further fellowships relating to the topic “Human-Machine”

Applications now possible

The JUNGE AKADEMIE, the international fellowship programme run by the Akademie der Künste in cooperation with VISIT, the artist-in-residence programme of the E.ON Stiftung, and E-WERK Luckenwalde, invites applications for four further fellowships per year for 2024 and 2025. The fellowships, which relate to the topic “Human-Machine”, have been awarded since 2020, and the cooperation has now been extended for two years. The programme is aimed at aspiring international artists from all artistic disciplines and is a means to promote projects at the interface of art, science and ecology. The new call for proposals is focused on artistic approaches to questions of sustainability in the realm of digital technologies – in particular, artificial intelligence.

The fellowships are endowed with 20,000 euros including project funds. Studios are made available for the fellows at E-WERK Luckenwalde and at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin’s Hansaviertel. Annual events are planned to take place at the Akademie der Künste and at E-WERK Luckenwalde. Artists of the diaspora are particularly encouraged to apply – those who need a safe space in which to keep developing their artistic practice without the pressure of having to produce or present a finished work.
The jury includes Anna Gritz, director, Haus am Waldsee; Anh-Linh Ngo, architectural theorist, curator, editor-in-chief, member of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin; Tiara Roxanne, artist and researcher; and Sinthujan Varatharajah, author and scholar.

Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the process in mid-September. The residencies will begin in spring 2024.

The “Human-Machine” programme supports international artists from all disciplines whose focus is on digital technologies and artificial intelligence in the broadest sense of the term and who question the history of progress as promulgated in the West and dualisms like “artificial” and “natural”. Their work promotes new ways of thinking, new narratives and new approaches to the world in relation to this theme and explores urgent aspects of the current situation facing society and the planet itself.

The following artists have been awarded fellowships in recent years: Sahej Rahal (2020), Natasha Tontey (2021), Petja Ivanova (2022), Tin Wilke and Laura Fong Prosper (2022). They will be showing recent work in the exhibition Broken Machines & Wild Imaginings, which opens on 1 June 2023 at the Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg. Further information is available here.
