Salut! Schalom! Works by Fred and Maxie Wander in the Archive

Archive Presentation

In 2014, the Akademie der Künste Archive was able to acquire the literary estates of Fred and Maxie Wander. Both born in Vienna, Fred and Maxie Wander lived and worked for nearly twenty years in East Germany. With Guten Morgen, du Schöne (Good Morning, Beautiful), a collection of monologues by women about their lives, Maxie Wander (1933–1977) created an iconic benchmark in documentary literature. The novels and writings of Fred Wander (1917 – 2006) were often autobiographical, drawing on his experiences in exile and concentration camps during the years of the Nazi regime. His travelogues and books for young people were also widely read. A reading from letters and texts provides an insight into Fred and Maxie Wander’s work. Two display cases present documents from their literary estates. Welcome Address: Birgit Jooss; introductory talk: Sabine Wolf; readings: Yohanna Schwertfeger and Thomas Bading.
