Werner Stötzer
After studying in Weimar and Dresden, Werner Stötzer became a master student of Gustav Seitz at the Akademie der Künste in East Berlin. Since the mid-1960s, he has been working intensively on his main theme, the torso: “I see my task as a sculptor is in breaking up the stone in such a way that it always gains new strength [...] The whole thing is, so to speak, an act of feeling, of instinct. All of a sudden, new possibilities, fields and dimensions develop from the hacking, which make me become cautious [...] You can only hack at the stone. One adds something to the stone in form by taking matter from it. So chopping is not a violation.” (Werner Stötzer, 1991)
