Open Archives
The Archives of the Akademie der Künste are opening their doors, providing an unusual, behind-the-scenes look at art archives. The building can be seen from top to bottom; from storage spaces to the reading room – with its stunning view overlooking Brandenburg Gate – to the roof terrace. Archivists and restorers can be observed at close quarters while they work. Staffled tours visit storage areas and the Picture Cellar, normally closed to the public, while explaining the Akademie’s eventful history. Readings and lectures offer insights about the library’s holdings, the Architecture Archives and the Art Collection. As a special attraction, students from Berlin’s Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts present a fashion show of theatre costumes from the Akademie’s extensive archival inventory.
"Erlesene Bibliotheken – Artists' Libraries" opens the same day. The exhibition focuses on personal libraries, and their roles as preferential workshops and sources of inspiration for those who create art. Illustrated artists’ books, volumes with dedications and workbooks illustrate artistic work practices, networks and preferences.
