Konrad Knebel

Konrad Knebel studied at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee under Arno Mohr, Bert Heller and Toni Mau and has worked as a freelance painter and graphic artist in (East) Berlin since 1957. Early on, Knebel found the themes that run through his entire oeuvre: Suburban streets, industrial cities, vacant lots, traffic, the human being and the worker in their urban environment. The artist works on site and creates cityscapes in harmoniously contrasting paintings and intense drawings, which allow the harsh beauty of unnoticed everyday things to be experienced in its essence. Knebel's paintings describe a man-made, melancholic world, often in an evening mood or at dawn, far from the poetically joyful connection to nature.
