Manthia Diawara ist einer der bekanntesten Filmtheoretiker des afrikanischen und afroamerikanischen Films, Filmemacher, Publizist und Kulturtheoretiker. An der New York University hat er einen Lehrstuhl für Komparatistik und Film. Der aus Martinique stammende Édouard Glissant (1928–2011), mit dem sich Diawara in seinem Video auseinandersetzt, ist einer der führenden Theoretiker der globalisierten Welt geworden, seit er 1981 das Buch Le Discours antillais veröffentlichte. 2009 publizierte er die Schrift Philosophie de la relation: poésie en étendue, die auch die Grundlage von Diawaras dokumentarischem Film bildet. Schon in früheren Publikationen definierte Glissant den Begriff „Relation“ als eine übergreifende Kategorie gegenseitiger Beziehung in einer ganzheitlichen Welt der Verschiedenheit. Seine karibische Herkunft gab ihm wohl den Anstoß zu einer utopischen Sicht auf die Welt der Zukunft als eine Inselwelt (archipelago), in der niemand die Führung beansprucht und alle Beteiligten ihre gemeinsamen Wurzeln entdecken. Im Film von Manthia Diawara verdeutlicht der Philosoph seine „nomadische Philosophie“. Die Relation ist, wie Glissant in seinem Buch schreibt, ein Raum, „der nicht dieses mit jenem, sondern alles mit allem verbindet“. Das Wurzelgeflecht (Rhizom) der Ideen, der Identitäten und der Intuitionen verbinde uns. Was die Relation uns vermittle, sei keine Geschichte, sondern ein Zustand der Welt, die Welt als Zustand. Der Film wurde außer in Martinique auch an Bord des Schiffes „Queen Mary II“ auf der Fahrt von Southampton nach New York aufgenommen. Die Interviews wurden von Diawara in jeweils zwei- bis fünfminütigen Clips festgehalten. (Andrea Buddensieg)

Manthia Diawara is among the most well-known film theorists of African and Afro-American film, a filmmaker, journalists, and cultural theoretician. He currently holds a professorship for comparative literature at New York University. Originally from Martinique, .douard Glissant (1928–2011), the subject Diawara examines in his video, counts among the leading theoreticians of the globalized world since the publication of his book Le Discours antillais in 1981. In 2009, he published Philosophie de la relation: poésie en étendue , which also forms the basis of Diawara’s documentary. Glissant had already defined the term “relation” as a general category of reciprocal relation in a holistic world of difference. His Caribbean origins provided the impetus for a utopian future view of the world as an archipelago in which nobody claims leadership and where all participants discover their mutual roots. In Manthia Diawara’s film, the philosopher explains his “nomadic philosophy.” Relation is, as Glissant writes in his book, a space “that does not connect this with that, but everything with everything.” The intertwining of the roots (rhizome) of ideas, the identities and intuitions is what connects us. What relations convey to us is not history but the condition of the world, the world as condition. In addition to Martinique, the film was also shot on board the “Queen Mary II” on the voyage from Southampton to New York. The interviews were captured by Diawara in two to five-minute clips.
