Archive Day: Facts, Stories, Curiosities

Presentation

On the occasion of the eleventh national Archive Day, this year under the motto “Facts, Stories, Curiosities”, the Archives of the Akademie der Künste are also offering a look behind the scenes.

An exciting digital programme will reveal the secrets of research and collecting. Archivists will introduce viewers to the special features of an art archive, present unique documents and answer questions live: Ask an archivist!

Registration for the online meetings via Zoom: tda@adk.de

Program

10 am
The revolver of Kurt Tucholsky
Werner Heegewaldt, Director of the Archives

11 am
Theatrical treasures in the “sacred halls” of the Academy archive
We would like to take you to our depot and show you objects that you might not expect to find in an archive, such as dancer Gret Palucca's suitcase, the stage set model for Herbert Fritsch's "Murmel murmel" or the legendary Tu-Tu from "The Dying Swan" for the dancer Maya Plisetskaya.
We present these and many other things to you, along with information about our “normal” everyday life in the archive, beyond the cellar and sleeve protectors.
Stephan Dörschel and Andrea Clos, Performing Arts Archives

12 pm
Berlin-Bali. The suitcases of Vicki Baum
Her novels reached the highest editions; the Nazis burned their books. From exile in America she traveled the world, Japan, China, Latin America... In 1994, her literary estate arrived in the Academy archives in two noble suitcases.
Sabine Wolf, Vice Director of the Archives

The bodice of Charlotte Basté
A bodice can certainly be considered a curiosity in a literary archive, all the more so when it was part of a stage costume worn by a child. A story about estate and crypto estate, about facts and fake.
Helga Neumann, Literature Archives

1 pm
Of pages and books. What Heinrich Mann's estate tells
Nelly Mann called her husband's library “unsaleable”. Many traces of reading show that Heinrich Mann's book collection was a working environment, workshop and source of inspiration. After a glimpse into Heinrich Mann's archive, the search for clues in the poet's personal library begins.
Dr Gabriele Radecke, Literature Archives, and Susanne Thier, Library
